Since 2024, ZENSLAB has begun expanding into the international market,
seeking to bring wood into more homes and everyday living spaces across a wider world.
This stop brings us to Penang, Malaysia.
At the edge of the Malacca Strait, where the sea breeze moves slowly,
the ZENSLAB Penang new store takes shape—
born from the South Seas’ local spirit and the memories of the Chinese diaspora,
continuing a gentle rhythm of nature and daily life.
Here, woodwork and space echo one another,
making room for pauses, ease, and quiet breath in everyday living.
01
A new store opens in Penang.
In a slow-paced city, wood is allowed to grow freely.

Penang is a city with a slow rhythm. Sea breeze drifts in from the strait into the old town, passing through arcades, alleyways, and the quiet gaps of everyday life. There is no need to rush to arrive here; it is a place better suited for slow lingering. Time is not compressed here, but unfolds in a gentler way.

Among several cities in Malaysia, Penang is not an easy choice. After repeated visits and considerations between Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang, the final decision here feels more like a natural alignment with a way of life and cultural atmosphere, rather than a purely commercial judgment.
What makes it special is a sense of continuity. Chinese culture here is not reduced to symbols, but remains present in everyday life. The older generation still speaks of their journeys south—stories of migration, settlement, and growth. These narratives continue quietly in the streets and daily routines. The city’s memory has not been broken; instead, it has accumulated layer by layer, becoming a tangible backdrop of life.

In this context, ZENSLAB chooses to stay here. Wood itself is also a slow presence, shaped by time and nature working together. When wood enters Penang, these rhythms begin to resonate with each other: the city’s slowness allows the warmth of wood to continue, while the quiet warmth of wood, in turn, adds a tangible sense of stability to everyday life. Thus, the opening of the ZENSLAB Penang store is not an expansion in the conventional sense, but rather a kind of natural pause—something that happens on its own.

02
Arriving at the space,
we begin an exploration of lifestyle among the wood.

The ZENSLAB Penang store in Malaysia has officially opened. Spanning approximately 200 square meters across two levels, the space is designed at a scale closer to everyday living.Solid wood slab tables are no longer presented merely as exhibits; instead, they are re-experienced and re-perceived through the flow of the space. Here, a renewed relationship between wood and life gradually takes shape.

The first floor is centered around large solid wood slab tables. Solid wood slabs of different materials and forms are brought together here in a concentrated presentation, with more than forty pieces arranged in sequence. Vertical display boards are also introduced, allowing the grain and structure of the wood to be seen and understood in a more complete way.A bar and an interaction area are integrated into the space as well, so that wood is no longer treated as a static display object. Instead, it naturally enters everyday sight and scale through people’s movement and lingering within the space.

Moving upward through the space, the second floor gradually shifts toward life itself. Around thirty types of chairs and sofas are arranged through different combinations, not displayed in a single stylistic order, but repositioned according to usage scenarios and varying spatial conditions.
Here, the space becomes an extension of everyday life: sitting down, lingering, talking, or simply staying in quiet stillness for a while.

The space does not emphasize a traditional logic of display. Instead, it focuses on what is perceived and experienced once people enter.Wood is no longer defined as a static exhibit, but as a presence that can be touched, used, and continuously involved in everyday life. As the relationship between people and wood is brought closer again, the space itself is no longer a boundary, but becomes a continuously unfolding field of living.

03
Mutually Generative Wood
Establishing a relational order between time and everyday life

The Penang store’s principal has long been engaged in the timber import trade, traveling between North America and Southeast Asia to manage the circulation and supply of wood from different regions. In this process, he gradually came to see how wood departs from the forest, passes through layers of processing, transportation, and market systems, and is ultimately translated into a table or a piece of furniture that enters everyday life. To him, wood is not merely a material, but a continuous pathway connecting nature and living.

In 2020, he shifted into the solid wood furniture sector and opened his first store in a furniture mall. Moving from raw material to finished product, and then to space, his relationship with wood gradually shifted from “circulation” to “use.” It was also during this stage that he began to redefine the value of wood: not merely in terms of rarity or price, but in its ability to continually enter everyday life and be used and perceived over time. Based on this experience, his focus moved beyond individual objects to the stable relationship formed between wood and people in daily life.

In the ZENSLAB Penang store, this understanding is translated into the space itself. It does not center on display, but keeps wood in a continuous state of being used, lingered with, and chosen, naturally integrating into everyday scenes of coffee, tea, and conversation. The tea space on the second floor is particularly expressive of this atmosphere. The combination of low tables and sofas allows the body to settle into a relaxed rhythm, and time is gently stretched. Here, the space is no longer merely a container, but a continuously unfolding field of life, where the relationships between wood and people, and between people and time, naturally extend and evolve.

04
In Presence
The space unfolds through visitors’ presence.
The new ZENSLAB store in Penang, Malaysia, has officially opened and welcomed its first visitors on the opening day. The space is reactivated through the presence of real foot traffic, and wood is no longer confined to static display, but enters tangible everyday scenes through viewing and touch.

Different people enter the space in their own ways: some pause in front of the solid wood slabs, some gather for conversation, while others move slowly along the stairs and circulation paths. Light, sound, and human flow together form a live, unfolding scene, softening and opening the boundaries of the space.

The opening of the ZENSLAB Penang store marks the beginning of a new kind of relationship. From the selection of timber, to the construction of the space, and the expression of a way of life, everything ultimately points to a simple intention: to bring wood back into everyday life.Penang’s openness and diversity make it a place naturally suited for relationships between people and space to unfold. Here, designers, users, and those who are simply drawn to wood can each enter, linger, and rediscover the distance between material and life in their own way.As such, this is not merely a furniture store, but more like a continuously open spatial field—waiting to be entered, and to be experienced again.
